The Saarschleife: Germany’s Most Spectacular River Bend
If someone says “Saarland,” 9 out of 10 people immediately picture one thing: the breathtaking Saarschleife (Saar Loop). This perfect horseshoe bend where the River Saar curls almost completely around a wooded mountain is Germany’s most famous river meander – more photographed than the Rhine Valley in many years!
The star viewpoint is Cloef, perched 180 metres above the river. On a clear day you can see for 60 km, across three countries (Germany, France, Luxembourg). Sunrise paints the loop in soft pink light, while sunset turns the water into liquid gold. The view is so iconic that it’s printed on Saarland’s official licence plates.
Getting there is easy: free parking, then a flat 400-metre walk (wheelchair and stroller-friendly) to the viewing platform. For the ultimate experience, walk the premium “Tafeltour Cloef” trail (5 km, 1.5–2 hours) – voted one of Germany’s most beautiful day hikes – or brave the 1,250-metre-long tree-top walkway that ends directly at the viewpoint, floating 42 metres above the forest floor.
Hungry? The modern Cloef-Atrium café serves regional specialities (try Dibbelabbes potato cake or homemade apple strudel) with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the loop. In summer, arrive before 9 am or after 4 pm to enjoy it almost alone.
Best months: May–October. In autumn the forest explodes in red and gold – pure magic. Come once, and you’ll understand why the Saarschleife is not just Saarland’s most famous sight, but one of the most beautiful natural wonders in all of Central Europe.

Additionally, you can conveniently discover a variety of captivating tourist destinations throughout Saarland of GERMANY . – WTTD is thrilled to recommend top travel attractions for your next adventure! #WTTD
Tip: Book the 2-hour guided tour in English (€3 extra) and climb to the top platform (125 m) for a crazy view over Saarland never shows on postcards. Open daily, great even when raining.
Tip: Every Saturday there’s a big farmers’ market on St. Johanner Markt — perfect for picnic supplies.
Tip: Grab a coffee at Café Kostbar and sit outside — it feels like 18th-century Paris. Free entry to the church; organ concerts on Wednesdays are breathtaking.
Tip: Try “Lyoner” sausage with mustard — the local speciality. In December the Christmas market here is one of the coziest in the region.
Tip: Combine with a boat trip on the Saar — many cruises stop just below.
Tip: Wear neutral colours, stay calm and quiet — wolves are curious but safe behind fences. Perfect for kids and photographers.
Tip: Park at the bottom and walk 15 minutes up — the view gets better with every step. Free and open 24/7.
Tip: Rent an e-bike at the Centre Parcs and cycle here; in summer the “Seaside Beach Club” has cocktails and DJs on weekends.
Tip: Come on a weekend when gladiator shows and Roman crafts happen. Kids love the treasure hunt.
Tip: Wear sturdy shoes and a jacket — it drips!
Tip: The café serves coffee in beautiful V&B cups with river view — Instagram heaven.
Tip: Combine with the “Irrel Waterfalls” just across the border in Luxembourg (15 min drive).
Tip: Rent an e-bike and cycle the “Apple Bike Path” — in spring the blossom is unreal, in autumn you can pick apples along the way.
