SAARLAND, GERMANY

The Saarschleife: Germany’s Most Spectacular River Bend

If someone says “Saarland,” 9 out of 10 people immediately picture one thing: the breathtaking Saarschleife (Saar Loop). This perfect horseshoe bend where the River Saar curls almost completely around a wooded mountain is Germany’s most famous river meander – more photographed than the Rhine Valley in many years!

The star viewpoint is Cloef, perched 180 metres above the river. On a clear day you can see for 60 km, across three countries (Germany, France, Luxembourg). Sunrise paints the loop in soft pink light, while sunset turns the water into liquid gold. The view is so iconic that it’s printed on Saarland’s official licence plates.

Getting there is easy: free parking, then a flat 400-metre walk (wheelchair and stroller-friendly) to the viewing platform. For the ultimate experience, walk the premium “Tafeltour Cloef” trail (5 km, 1.5–2 hours) – voted one of Germany’s most beautiful day hikes – or brave the 1,250-metre-long tree-top walkway that ends directly at the viewpoint, floating 42 metres above the forest floor.

Hungry? The modern Cloef-Atrium café serves regional specialities (try Dibbelabbes potato cake or homemade apple strudel) with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the loop. In summer, arrive before 9 am or after 4 pm to enjoy it almost alone.

Best months: May–October. In autumn the forest explodes in red and gold – pure magic. Come once, and you’ll understand why the Saarschleife is not just Saarland’s most famous sight, but one of the most beautiful natural wonders in all of Central Europe.

Additionally, you can conveniently discover a variety of captivating tourist destinations throughout Saarland of  GERMANY . – WTTD is thrilled to recommend top travel attractions for your next adventure! #WTTD
